Managing Anxiety During Uncertainty: Practical & Compassionate Strategies

Writer: Christyn GreczkowskiChristyn Greczkowski

Lately, the weight of the world has felt heavier than usual. The rising tensions between Canada and the U.S., the ongoing trade wars, and the unpredictability of tariffs have created a ripple effect that reaches beyond policy and economics—it touches lives, livelihoods, and our collective sense of stability. If you’re feeling anxious, uncertain, or overwhelmed, you are not alone. Many are grappling with what this means for their businesses, their jobs, and their future. It’s natural to feel uneasy when so much is out of our control.

But here’s what I want you to hear: your feelings are valid, and you don’t have to navigate them alone.

In times of uncertainty, our minds instinctively search for certainty. We analyze, predict, and try to plan for every possible outcome. But when the future is unclear, this can become an exhausting loop of worry. Instead of clarity, we often find ourselves stuck in anxiety. What if, instead of striving for certainty, we learned to find steadiness within ourselves?

Grounding Ourselves in Compassion

Compassion—both for ourselves and for others—can be a powerful antidote to stress and uncertainty. Dr. Kristin Neff’s work on self-compassion teaches us that when we’re struggling, we need to lean into three essential practices: mindfulness, kindness, and common humanity.

  • Mindfulness: Recognizing what we are feeling without judgment. Instead of pushing away your anxiety, try acknowledging it with gentleness.

"I’m feeling anxious right now, and that’s understandable. This is a stressful time."

  • Kindness: Offering yourself the same warmth and care you would a friend. Imagine someone you love telling you they’re overwhelmed—how would you respond? Offer yourself that same understanding.

"I am doing my best in an uncertain situation. It’s okay to feel this way."

  • Common Humanity: Remembering that we are not alone in our struggles. So many people are feeling the same stress, uncertainty, and worry. Instead of isolating ourselves in our fear, we can remind ourselves that struggle is part of the human experience.

"We are all in this together.'

Practical Strategies for Managing Anxiety During Uncertainty

While compassion is a foundation, there are also practical steps we can take to soothe our nervous system and regain a sense of control.

1. Cognitive Strategies: Reframing Uncertainty

  • Shift from "What if everything goes wrong?" to "What is within my control right now?"

  • Notice catastrophic thoughts and challenge them with evidence: "Have I faced uncertainty before and found a way through it? Yes, I have."

  • Limit exposure to news and discussions that fuel anxiety—stay informed but not overwhelmed.

2. Behavioural Strategies: Creating Stability in the Present

  • Engage in small, grounding rituals: a morning cup of tea, a walk, journaling.

  • Move your body—exercise can help release built-up stress and tension.

  • Focus on what is predictable in your daily life. Structure and routine can create a sense of stability.

3. Social Strategies: Connecting with Others

  • Talk to someone you trust. Sharing your worries out loud can help lighten the load.

  • Seek community—whether it’s friends, family, or a support group, connection reminds us that we’re not alone.

  • If stress is overwhelming, reach out for professional support. Therapy offers a space where you can process emotions and develop coping strategies in a safe, supportive environment.

A Gentle Reminder

Uncertainty is uncomfortable, but it is also an invitation. An invitation to slow down, to lean into compassion, to reconnect with ourselves and others. You don’t have to have all the answers right now. You don’t have to navigate this alone. Offer yourself kindness in the same way you would a dear friend. In the midst of the unknown, one thing remains steady—you are worthy of care, patience, and support.

Take a breath. You are not alone in this.
