What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session
Starting therapy can feel like a big step. You might feel a mix of excitement, nervousness, or even uncertainty. If you’re considering therapy but aren’t sure what to expect, this guide will walk you through the process to help ease your mind and set you up for a positive experience.

Before Your First Session
The process usually begins with scheduling an initial consultation or intake session. At Compassion Counselling & Psychotherapy, I offer a free consultation to discuss your needs, answer any questions, and determine if we’re a good fit to work together. This step helps build trust and ensures you feel comfortable.
What Happens in the First Session?
The first session is primarily about getting to know you and understanding your reasons for seeking therapy. Here are some things you can expect:
Introductions and Setting Expectations
We’ll start by discussing confidentiality and what therapy entails. This is a safe space where you can share openly, knowing that your privacy is respected.
Exploring Your Concerns
I’ll ask questions about what brought you to therapy. These might include:
What challenges are you facing right now?
How are these challenges affecting your daily life?
Have you tried anything to address these concerns before?
Gathering Background Information
To get a fuller picture, we might discuss your personal history, relationships, and any relevant mental health or medical information. This helps tailor therapy to your unique needs.
Clarifying Your Goals
Together, we’ll identify what you hope to achieve through therapy. Whether it’s managing anxiety, improving relationships, or exploring self-discovery, setting goals provides direction for our work together.
Will I Have to Share Everything Right Away?
Absolutely not. You’re in control of what you share and when. The first session is about building a foundation of trust and understanding. You’re welcome to take things at your own pace.
How Should I Prepare for the First Session?
Reflect on Your Goals: Consider what you’d like to gain from therapy. It’s okay if your goals evolve over time, but having a starting point can be helpful.
Write Down Questions: If you have concerns or curiosities about the process, jot them down. This is your opportunity to get answers.
Be Open to the Experience: It’s normal to feel nervous, but remember that therapy is a collaborative and supportive journey
The Start of a Collaborative Journey
Therapy is not a one-size-fits-all process. It’s a partnership where we work together to explore, heal, and grow. Building a strong therapeutic alliance is key, as it’s one of the strongest predictors of success in therapy. My approach is grounded in creating a safe, nonjudgmental, and compassionate environment where you can feel supported.
After the First Session
At the end of our session, we’ll discuss next steps. This might include scheduling future appointments, discussing the frequency of sessions, or identifying initial strategies to try between sessions. You’ll leave with a clearer understanding of the path forward.
